What has happened to CO.CC?
I use www.co.cc quiet a bit. I came across co.cc when I was involved in countering 419 fraud. Scammers used the free subdomain service quiet a lot to register “fake banking websites”. www.co.cc had an open registration system, anyone could join, sign up for an account and get a seemingly top level domain for free as in www.Mysite.co.cc. They were extremely quick to shut down accounts used by scammers and both www.AA419.org and www.antifraudintl.org did an amazing job of reporting to CO.CC with almost immediate results.
Personally, I registered the domain www.eastenergy.co.cc in 2009 which I used with Google apps for personal email. Later on I registered Taidgh.com and forwarded all emails to Taidgh@eastenergy.co.cc. It was useful as a central address for me but also very useful to the thousands of community clubs, bloggers and others who wanted a cheap (free) domain name.
In July last year Google blocked CO.CC along with 11 million subdomains, including mine. (I have used several others as well as eastenergy.co.cc ie test-url.co.cc) Some might say that they threw out the baby with (rather dirty) bathwater while others say it is better to allow 10 guilty go free than to punish one innocent. This seems to be the ethics of many large well known providers who would refuse to shut down a website.
To put it in context this is a chart of email providers used for spamming in 2008
The same logic dictates that as gmail was used by most scammers then Gmail should be blocked from google.com?
At the moment CO.CC is down and doesn’t look like it is coming back.
For me it is irrelevant as I have changed the MX servers for my sites to a .com but for many others they have lost their website
