I walk past this T-34 tank in Bermondsey on the way into work every morning. Yeah, that is a weird statement coming from someone without a gun in his hand.
Legend has it that Russell Gray bought the land to build a house at the end of a very pretty street. The council then refused planning permission for the house and after months of fighting the red tape and applying for “correct documentation” our hero Russell applied for planning permission for a “tank to hold water”.
The council granted his application and Russell paid £7k for a T34 tank which can in theory hold a little water.
Days later.. the council come to inspect and are a bit dumbfounded. “You CANNOT have planning permission for this here!” upon which Russell presents the “correct documentation” for his “tank”. The kicker, The gun barrel is pointing at the planning permission offices in Southwark.
Lovely story, and possibly true although I would guess that it was dreamt up by people as they waded through planning applications taking some small pleasure in the thought that there is a 3inch cannon pointing at their nemesis!
I dont care, its a good story and it costs nothing to believe it so i chose to believe.
